Most Famous World Heritage Site Mountain Railways of India 

The Mountain Railways of India referred to as railway lines built on the mountains. In India, there are three famous railway lines such as Kalka- Shimla, Darjeeling, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. These are 2ft 6-inch narrow gauge trains. These are considered under the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The fourth train, Matheran railway is another train and is in the tentative UNESCO site list. Thousands of travelers excited to make this journey throughout the year. Heritage Hill trains are run by the government of Indian railway. The trains pass through Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal states.






Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a 1000mm gauge train. In 1908, the British government built a mountain railway network operated by Southern Railway. Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a Rack Train. In 2005, the train consideration under the Herigate site. The train pass between Coonoor and Udagamanfalam. It was one of the famous and oldest Mountain Railways in India. Travelers are interested in making this train tour while they visiting Ooty. This mountain railway offers a pleasant climate and scenic nature of Tamil Nadu. At present, the train runs 7.2 kilometers up to foothill station of Karla. The Nilgiri passenger travel 208 curves and 250 bridges. The journey completed in five hours.

2. Darjeeling Hill Train one of the Mountain Railways of India

The Darjeeling is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It was one of the famous tourist spots in this state. Darjeeling Mountain railway is another famous train in India that runs 88 kilometers between Siliguri and Darjeeling. Darjeeling train also called “The Toy Train.” It is a steam locomotive train. The first train operated in 1861. In 1999, Darjeeling train first to be recognized by Heritage site. The toy train takes around seven hours to complete the journey from Siliguri. This 2 ft train journey offers the culture and life of West Bengal.

3. Kalka- Shimla Railway 

Shimla is the modern capital of Himachal Pradesh. The city situated at an altitude of 2,020 meters above sea level. All have known as Shimla is the Summer capital of Himachal State. There is a famous attraction in Shimla. It maintained a Mountain railway. Kalka- Shimla, a 2ft 6 inches train. The train built in 1898 that runs 96 kilometers up to 18 stations. The Shimla mountain railway network run by the Northern Railway. Travelers to make this journey during the summer or early of winter days. From December to February, Shimla railway lines and tourist places filled with snow. In 1903, UNESCO added Kalka- Shimla railway under heritage site.
