Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, a beautiful sanctuary located in the Eastern-Indian state of Bihar. The place situated 50 kilometers away from river Ganga in Bhagalpur district and also known as ‘Soons’. This sanctuary established in the year 1981 to protect and preserve this vulnerable species of Dolphins and the place declared as an area for Gangetic Dolphins In India. The sanctuary attracts the Travellers visit the destination to explore the beautiful dolphins and other aquatic species. National Ganga River Basin Authority declared the Vikramshila’s Gangetic dolphins as National Aquatic Animal of India.







Best Season To Visit Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in Bihar

Vikramshila looks beautiful in the winter season and this is the best to explore it. November, December, January, February, and March are the best months to visit the destination. October and June also considered the best time.
The climate Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary usually warm and suitable for sightseeing. Summer season starts from the month of March and continues till June. Climate is very hot and the temperature ranges between 30 to 42-degree Celsius. Sanctuary experiences moderate rainfall during the monsoon session, in the months from June to September. November to February observed as winter season in Vikrashila. The climate is cool and the place looks pleasant. During the period the temperature recorded between 13 to 30-degree Celsius.

Gangetic Dolphins are the main attraction in Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary. The place not only filled with dolphins, also filled with various rich varieties of flora and fauna. Aquatic wildlife like Gharials, freshwater turtles, Indian smooth-coated Otter, and more than 100 species of waterfowl are protected here. Photography views, fishes and birds are the other attractions in the destination.  

The sanctuary has a special protection force to protect dolphins. Barriers and multiple dams are placed in the area for the free moving of the wildlife. Various NGO’s and different organizations created awareness on Dolphin conservation. Mahabodhi Temple, Buddha Stupa, Vishal Fort are the other attractions.

Travellers can reach the destination via by air, train, and road. The nearest airport located at Patna, which is approximately 230 kilometers from the destination. Regular flights connected from all the major destinations in India. Bhagalpur is the nearest railway station located from the sanctuary. Daily trains available from Patna, Sulthanganj and other tourist destinations. Private vehicles available to reach the sanctuary. 

Sanctuary has good road connectivity to Patna and Bhagalpur.
