Thattekad Bird Sanctuary / Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Kerala
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, one of the famous wildlife spots in South India. Situated in Kothamangalam taluk, Ernakulam district of the South Indian state of Kerala. Also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary spread an area of 25 square kilometers and is the first wildlife sanctuary in Kerala.
The park is a home to several species of wild animals and flora. This is the perfect spot for adventure activities. Tourist department of Kerala offered a wide range of activities to the regular visitors. Elephant, Leopard, Deer are available species of animals in Thattekad Sanctuary.
Best Season To Visit Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Summer in Thattekad starts from March to June. At this time, it gains heavy temperature between 25 to 35 degree Celsius. Sanctuary has closed during the Monsoon season due to the heavy rain fall. Kerala gains heavy rainfall compare to other states in South India.
Because Kerala has covered with full of the lush green valley. The best season to visit Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in the winter season. It lasts from October to February. During this period, the sanctuary exhibits pleasant and sightseeing favorable climate. This is also the time, Birds make their way to Thattekad.
Wildlife Animals and Attractions in Salim Ali Sanctuary
Orange-headed Thrush, Large-billed leaf-warbler, Jerdon’s Nightjar, Indian cuckoo, Oriental Darter, Cormorants, Whiskered Terns, Collared scops owl, Ceylon, frogmouth, Grey-fronted green pigeon, Yellow-browed bulbuls, Drongo Cuckoo, are famous birds in this sanctuary. It also a home to both Forest birds as well as water birds. Other 250 species of Birds are lived in this sanctuary.
There is a tree storied watch tower inside of this sanctuary. It offers the best accommodation to the visitors. Forest department’s inspection bungalow also situated near to Thattekad Bird sanctuary. Bhoothathankettu Reservoir is another tourist attraction near Salim Ali sanctuary.
